Large queues of ships at the Sulin Canal roadstead increase carriers' costs

Large queues of ships at the Sulina Canal roadstead significantly increase the costs of carriers, say experts from Avalon Shipping.

Yes, one of the ships entered the roadstead on September 25, but as of October 27, it is in 50th place in the queue for entry. Even in the most optimistic scenario, if the canal is open for the next two weeks and five pilots will guide ships through it to Ukrainian ports every day, the ship will have to wait in line for at least 10 more days, but the actual time in line may be two or more weeks.

Long-term vessel downtime significantly increases carriers' costs. If the demurrage rate is $4,000/day, then after 40 days of waiting, the total cost will reach $160,000, which would previously have been enough to pay for the freight for the entire voyage.

Therefore, significant downtime and the resulting significant increase in costs raise questions about the feasibility of exporting agricultural products through Danube ports.
