Grain harvesting rates and yields in Ukraine are lower than last year, and export volumes are half as much

According to the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture, as of August 7, 19.91 million tons of grain and legume crops were threshed from 5.3 million hectares or 47% of the planned area in Ukraine, with an average yield of 3.76 tons/ha, while last year, as of August 8, 27.322 million tons of grain and legume crops were harvested from 6.521 million hectares or 59% of the area, with an average yield of 4.19 tons/ha.

On the specified date, collected:

  • wheat – 14.914 million tons from an area of 3.713 million hectares (74%) with a yield of 4.02 tons/hectare (4.42 tons/hectare last year),
  • barley – 4.25 million tons from an area of 1.169 million hectares (84%) with a yield of 3.65 tons/hectare (3.81 tons/hectare),
  • peas – 541.2 thousand tons from an area of 223.7 thousand hectares (92%) with a yield of 2.42 tons/hectare (2.21 tons/hectare),
  • millet – 0.89 thousand tons from an area of 1.3 thousand hectares (2%) with a yield of 0.72 tons/hectare.

Farmers of the Dnipropetrovsk region have begun harvesting buckwheat, of which 100 tons were threshed from 200 hectares with a yield of 0.477 tons/hectare.

In addition, as of August 7, 2.538 million tons of rapeseed were harvested from 1.023 million hectares (80% of the planned area) with a yield of 2.48 tons/hectare (2.72 tons/hectare last year).

Rainfall in western Ukraine delays harvest and worsens grain quality. Fungal damage to wheat and germination of rapeseed in pods have been recorded.

According to the State Customs Service, in the 2025/26 MY (as of August 8), Ukraine exported 2.135 million tons of grain and leguminous crops, of which 470 thousand tons in August, while last year as of August 5, 4.713 million tons of grain were exported, in particular, 1.011 million tons in August.

By crop, the following were exported in the current season:

  • wheat – 1.091 million tons (in August – 333 thousand tons);
  • barley – 329 thousand tons (72 thousand tons);
  • corn – 706 thousand tons (63 thousand tons).

Total exports of Ukrainian flour since the beginning of the season as of August 8 are estimated at 5 thousand tons (in August - 1.4 thousand tons), in particular wheat - 4.8 thousand tons (1.4 thousand tons).
