The deputies proposed to officially ban the production, processing and distribution of products with GMOs

In the Verkhovna Rada the draft to the Parliament bill No. 4968 that introduces to 01.01.2023 G. a moratorium on the cultivation, production, processing, distribution, transportation and importation of plants with the GMO capable of replication or inheritance of the properties.

the Committee on agrarian policy, Verkhovna Rada proposed to consider the bill, which provides for amendments to the current Law of Ukraine "On state security in creating, testing, transportation and use of genetically modified organisms. The bill to 01.01.2023 G. prohibits the commercial production, processing and distribution of goods with GMOs, capable of replication or inheritance of the properties for later use:

• the in food, feed or additives
• the in growing farm animals
• the selhozarteli when grown in open ground, except designed for research purposes.

Also prohibited the import of products with GMOs in Ukraine for use in the above purposes.

it is Expected that the introduction of a moratorium on the ban of sales of products with GMOs, will be postponed for 1 year in order to provide the time needed for export of agricultural plants with GMOs.

For the violation of the statutory ban on the cultivation, production, import and distribution of GMOs assumes administrative responsibility in the form of cancellation for a period of 5 years licenses to conduct economic activities and of a fine of 40-90 thousand non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens.

Violation of rules for the export of goods with GMOs provides for penalties in the amount of 50-100 thousand non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens.

the Bill underlines the need for 2023 by accredited laboratories studies on the economic feasibility of the use of GMOs, as well as its biological and ecological safety and benefit for life and human health. If the findings confirm the safety of GMO products for living organisms and the environment, the moratorium will be stopped. As scientifically-proven insights about this effect of no, it is not feasible to distribute in Ukraine GM foods and their production.
