Harvesting in Ukraine is half as slow as last year, and yields are still lower

Due to precipitation and late ripening dates, grain harvesting in Ukraine is half as slow as last year. As of July 18, 2025, 7.23 million tons of early grain and leguminous crops were threshed from 2.35 million hectares in Ukraine with an average yield of 3.07 tons/hectare, while as of July 20, 2024, 15.7 million tons of grain were harvested from 4.4 million hectares with a yield of 3.57 tons/hectare.
Yes, on the specified date, the following was threshed:
- wheat — 4.67 million tons from an area of 1.50 million hectares with a yield of 3.11 tons/hectare (last year, 10.3 million tons were harvested from 2.626 million hectares with a yield of 3.92 tons/hectare);
- barley — 2.18 million tons from an area of 660.6 thousand hectares with a yield of 3.3 tons/hectare (3.1 million tons, 824 thousand hectares, 3.76 tons/hectare);
- peas - 362.9 thousand tons from an area of 170.8 thousand hectares with a yield of 2.12 tons/hectare (319.3 thousand tons, 154.7 thousand hectares, 2.06 tons/hectare);
- rapeseed – 614.1 thousand tons from an area of 360.3 thousand hectares with a yield of 1.7 tons/hectare (1.8 million tons, 779.1 thousand hectares, 2.31 tons/hectare).
The leader in harvesting remains the Odesa region, where 2.02 million tons of grain were threshed from 722.1 thousand hectares, while farmers in the Mykolaiv region harvested 1.17 million tons of grain from 488.7 thousand hectares, and in the Kirovohrad region, they harvested 963 thousand tons of grain from 238.6 thousand hectares.
Low yields in the south may be offset by better yields in central and western Ukraine, but prolonged rainfall could slow down harvesting and worsen the quality of wheat, which is currently mostly food-grade.
