If the war in Iran lasts until June, humanity will face the largest famine in history – WFP
Experts from the UN World Food Program (WFP) in a report released on Tuesday predict that tens of millions of people will experience severe hunger if the war in Iran continues until June, Reuters reports.
The US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which began on February 26, have blocked the main routes for delivering humanitarian aid and food supplies to some areas with humanitarian crises.
According to WFP estimates, as a result of rising oil and food prices, about 45 million more people could find themselves in a state of acute hunger, and overall, the number of people suffering from food shortages worldwide will exceed the current maximum of 319 million people.
Even before the war in the Middle East, the scale of famine was at record levels, both in terms of the number of people and the depth of the food crisis, and after February 28, WFP’s costs for sea transport increased by 18%. In addition, supply chains have had to be changed, resulting in additional costs, while funding for many programs is being reduced as donors redirect funds to defense.
