The number of poultry, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs is decreasing in Ukraine

Against the background of a rise in the price of feed and a decrease in the profitability of production in Ukraine, the trend of reducing the number of poultry, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs remains.

According to the state statistics service, as of October 1, 2021, the number of cattle amounted to 3.1 million heads, which is 6.7% lower than the corresponding indicator last year, in particular, the number of cows decreased by 1.7% to 1.64 million heads. During the year, the number of cattle in agricultural enterprises decreased by 1.2% to 1 million heads, in households – by 9.1% to 2.1 million heads.

The increase in the industrial number of pigs for the year by 3.6% to 3.7 million heads did not compensate for the reduction in their number in households by 8.9% to 2.36 million heads, so the total number of pigs decreased by 1.7% to 6.07 million heads.

The number of sheep and goats for the year decreased by 5.6% to 1.3 million heads, in particular in households – by 6.9% to 1.134 million heads, although in the industrial sector it increased by 7.4% to 162 thousand heads.

The number of domestic birds decreased by 1.8% to 234 million heads, including at enterprises – by 1.7% to 118.3 million heads, at the population – by 2% to 115.7 million heads.

Prices for pork in live weight remain at the level of 48-49 UAH/kg due to low demand and seasonal increase in supply from households.

The Consumer Price Index (inflation) in Ukraine in the period January-August 2021 was 106.2% compared to 101.2% in 2020. In particular, food and non – alcoholic beverages rose in price by 7.8%, sunflower oil – by 45%, sugar – by 34.1%, meat and meat products-by 12.1-5.1%, while eggs fell in price by 6.7%.
