The President of Ukraine signed the law voted on September 4 by the Verkhovna Rada "On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine on Improving the Quality of Food Products, including Food Products Consumed by Children", which regulates the quality and safety of food products and takes into account the best global practice in regulating the content of trans fat products.
The new law provides for:
- setting the maximum content of trans fatty acids in food products at the level of 2 g per 100 g of the total amount of all fats contained in the product;
- banning the use of palm oil in traditional dairy products;
- prohibition of the use of hydrogenated palm oil and other hydrogenated vegetable fats in baby food;
- prohibition of the use of hydrogenated palm oil in food products (confectionery: chocolate, ice cream, etc.).
In addition, products containing palm oil must be clearly and comprehensibly labelled, and market operators who supply food to other producers must provide information on the content of trans fatty acids in these products.
