The progress of the harvest in Russia and Ukraine affecting world markets
In Ukraine 91% of the area harvested 21.5 million tons of winter wheat and its gathering is almost complete. According to the agriculture Ministry, the wheat crop including spring reaches the earlier forecast of 24 million tonnes.
still uncertain is the question of quality of wheat and the share of food grains.
Data about the high content of smut in wheat, especially in the Western regions, support prices for food wheat in Ukraine and the world, and keep the markets in suspense.
As of 06.08.18 of the 8.5 million hectares (86% of plan) produced 28.6 million tons of grain and leguminous crops on yield of 33.8 kg/ha, in particular:
of spring wheat from 59.4 thousand hectares (30%) – 184,9 thousand tons with a yield of 31.1 t/ha,
winter barley with 857 thousand hectares (98%) – 3 million tons with a yield of 35.0 t/ha,

peas from 92 thousand hectares (90%) of 705 thousand tons with a yield of 18.0 t/ha,
rye with 82 thousand hectares (55%) – 218 thousand tons with a yield of 26.7 t/ha,

In Russia, despite the lower yields the quality of grain higher than last year due to dry and hot weather.
As of 07.08.18 in the country with 36.7% of the area harvested 56.9 million tonnes of grain with a yield of 3.34 t/ha (against 11.64 t/a on the same date in 2017), in particular:
barley winter and spring of 6.8 million tonnes with 29% of the area with a yield of 2.81 t/ha (2017 is 3.59 t/ha),
rape 305,2 thousand tonnes 155 thousand hectares (9,8%) with a yield of 1.97 t/ha (2017 – of 2.08 t/ha).
- for winter wheat and spring 46,1 million tons with 13 million hectares (47,8%) with a yield of 3.54 t/ha (2017 – 4,37 t/ha),
an Updated assessment of production and export of wheat from Russia will help stabilise world prices, which are now growing because of declining production forecasts in the EU.
