The European Commission agreed to limit the export of grain from Ukraine, but promised to improve transit

The European Commission announced that it had agreed with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria to limit the supply of Ukrainian wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower there, and to provide farmers affected by grain surpluses on the market with EUR 100 million in aid in exchange for the cancellation of unilateral ban on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine, - the Deputy Chairman of the EC Valdis Dombrovskis said on Twitter.

The agreement provides for the cancellation by the governments of the specified countries of restrictions on the import of grain from Ukraine, the provision of EUR 100 million in aid to farmers, and the introduction of precautionary measures (meaning quotas on the import of grain) for four types of grain: wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower.

In the future, the EU may introduce tax restrictions on supplies of sunflower oil and other types of products from Ukraine. Currently, the European Commission has begun an investigation into the amount of damage caused to European producers by the unlimited import of Ukrainian goods, and has promised to ensure the export of food from Ukraine to other countries by land and river routes.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reported on Twitter about the "achievement of agreement in principle on the transit of four types of grain from Ukraine", thus confirming that the new agreement should ensure the transfer of grain imports for its transit to other countries.

We will remind that on April 28, representatives of the EU member states extended the duty-free import of goods from Ukraine for another year, and on the eve of the abolition of the EU import duty on Ukrainian products for another year, the Committee on International Trade of the European Parliament agreed.

The suspension of tariffs applies to fruits and vegetables covered by the system of input prices, as well as agricultural products and products of their processing, which are subject to tariff quotas.

The final decision of the European Commission must be approved by the European Parliament in May.
