Increased queues at Sulina increase freight rates from Danube ports of Ukraine

Freight rates for the transportation of agricultural products from Ukrainian ports on the Danube are increasing due to a shortage of vessels and delays in traffic through the Sulina Canal.

 

According to ASAP Agri, rates for transporting corn in batches of 6,000 tons from Danube ports to Egypt increased by $5/ton to $100-105/ton.

 

Currently, the main demand in the Ukrainian freight market is transportation through the ports of the Danube, but despite the significant supply of cargo, the number of ships whose owners agree to work in this direction is limited.

 

One of the reasons for the shortage of vessels is the long queue for passage through the Sulina Canal, which takes 15 days to enter Ukrainian ports and 3 days to exit.

 

Amidst traffic delays, ship owners continue to raise freight rates, while cargo owners are forced to accept expensive offers due to a lack of available berths.
