Morocco could double grain production by 2026 thanks to favorable rainfall
According to forecasts by the Federation of Flour Milling Companies of Morocco (FNM), thanks to good winter precipitation, the country can harvest 8-9 million tons of grain crops in 2026 (of which 5 million tons of soft wheat), which will double last year's figure, Asharq Al Awsat reports.
According to the Moroccan Meteorological Department, winter precipitation was 34% above the 30-year average and three times higher than the 2025 level. Floods destroyed 110,000 hectares of wheat crops, but this will be offset by high grain yields.
In 2025, the area sown with winter crops increased to 3.7 million hectares compared to 2.6 million hectares in 2024, when 4.4 million tons of grain were harvested, including 2.4 million tons of soft wheat.
From June 2025 to January 2026, grain imports to Morocco reached 7 million tons (which is 12% higher than the corresponding figure of the previous season), in particular, 3.2 million tons of soft wheat, the main suppliers of which were France (2.26 million tons), Argentina (233.1 thousand tons), the Russian Federation (227.1 thousand tons), Germany (120.1 thousand tons) and the USA (94.7 thousand tons).
Increased grain production in North African countries will significantly impact exports from the EU and the Black Sea region in the new season.
