Thanks to new agricultural technologies, China harvested a record crop of spring cereals in 2024

Thanks to the introduction of new agricultural technologies and mechanization, China harvested a record crop of spring cereals in 2024, despite adverse weather conditions.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, spring grain production (which usually accounts for 25% of total grain production) increased by 2.5% year-on-year to 149.78 million tons.
The rapid change in the world's climate is leading to an increase in extreme weather events such as heat, drought, heavy rains and floods, threatening the world's global food security. Against this background, all countries, especially developing ones, need to introduce new agricultural technologies and strengthen cooperation in the agricultural sector.
China considers new agricultural technologies to be the main factor in the modernization of agriculture, which is a top priority for it, as it allows to ensure stable and safe supplies of grain and other types of agricultural products. Constant investments in agricultural infrastructure allowed the country to stabilize grain production. Despite the increase in the number of abnormal weather events, the average yield is constantly increasing. So, in 2024, the yield of spring cereals increased compared to last year by 2.5% or 0.135 t/ha to 5.628 t/ha.
The development of new agricultural equipment and software, and other investments in the agricultural sector, have allowed China to increase the cultivation of grain in non-arable lands such as deserts and salt marshes.
In 2023, the country increased grain production compared to the previous year by 8.88 million tons or 1.3% to 695.41 million tons, and the average yield increased by 0.8% from 6.45 to 6.5 t/ha .
China intends to further improve its agricultural technologies and use new resources to increase grain production.
