The State Register of GMOs will be operational in Ukraine from September
Starting in September, the State Register of GMOs will begin operating in Ukraine - a digital database integrated with EU standards, which will ensure the legal circulation of genetically modified organisms, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture T. Vysotskyi reported.
Recall that from September 16, a law comes into force that provides for mandatory state registration of GMOs in a digital register and increased control over their circulation in accordance with EU standards. Now, if the proportion of GMOs in a product is higher than 0.9%, the manufacturer is obliged to apply the label "with GMOs."
According to the procedure, the company will submit an application, a special state commission will conduct a scientific risk assessment, on the basis of which the Ministry of Economy will make a decision no later than 180 days from the date of submission of the application - to refuse registration or to register the GMO and enter it in the State Register.
Currently, the circulation of GMOs without registration is prohibited in Ukraine, but no GMO has been registered since 2007. Therefore, the new rules will make the circulation of GMOs legal and understandable for all market participants.
