High barley yield in southern Ukraine increases pressure on purchase prices

Due to heavy precipitation in May and June, winter crop harvesting will begin 1-2 weeks later than last year. At the end of the week, the rains ended, so farmers stepped up harvesting barley in the south of Ukraine. Preliminary data indicate a high yield of barley, but due to the significant vegetative mass, the humidity of the first batches is 16-17%. Many barley crops were laid down by rain and a large mass.

According to preliminary data, the yield of winter barley is 5-7 t/ha, which allows us to hope for a good harvest, especially in the southern regions, where last year due to the drought, the yield was 0.5-1 t/ha.

According to forecasts, in the south of Ukraine from Friday to Tuesday it will rain again, which in other regions will last for another week. This is fraught with a rash of barley, and losses, according to agricultural producers, can reach 20-30%.

The beginning of barley harvesting and increased supplies to the port against the background of forecasts of a good harvest collapsed purchase prices. During the week, they decreased in the port from 7000-7100 UAH/ton or 225-230 $/ton to 6550-6650 UAH/ton or 210-215 грн/ton and will drop to 200 $/ton if the weather allows you to collect winter barley on time and without losses.

Some traders report that during the week they purchased volumes of barley that are almost sufficient for deliveries scheduled for July – August, so purchase prices will not rise.
