Corn production in Bulgaria has doubled, and sunflower production has increased by 80%.

In the 2026/27 MY, grain and oilseed production in Bulgaria increased significantly after a difficult previous season.

According to Grainstore Bulgaria experts, the country's corn harvest has doubled compared to last year from 0.9 to 2 million tons, sunflower - by 79% from 1.4 to 2.5 million tons, and wheat - from 7.5 to 7.8 million tons.

The resumption of production is helping to boost Bulgarian grain and sunflower exports, but they are being constrained by logistical problems. Low water levels in the Danube are making river transport difficult, and heavy strain on rail infrastructure is delaying the delivery of products to ports and buyers, increasing transport costs and reducing producers' incomes.

Additional pressure on prices is the low quality of the new wheat crop, although the indicators vary greatly depending on the growing region. A significant part of the crop will be of feed quality, which will complicate its sale on the world market.

The difficult situation in the Black Sea also reduces the competitiveness of Bulgarian agricultural products. Problems with shipping increase the cost of freight and insurance and force buyers to look for alternative sources of supply. At the same time, the stabilization of sea transportation may increase competition from other Black Sea exporters.

Therefore, despite the resumption of production, the volume of Bulgarian grain exports will primarily depend on logistics costs and the situation on the regional grain market.
