The Verkhovna Rada supported the bill on green energy, which will introduce sustainability criteria for biofuels
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, in its repeated first reading, supported draft law No. 14271, which provides for the implementation of European legislation in the field of renewable energy in order to harmonize the norms of Ukraine and the EU, enhance the stability of the energy system, strengthen the country's energy security, and stimulate the development of green generation by attracting investments, the Verkhovna Rada website reported.
The new document simplifies the development of solar and wind power plants, changes permitting procedures, and introduces new rules for energy communities, allowing communities, condominiums, or consumer groups to jointly produce electricity. Increasing green energy production will reduce Ukraine's dependence on energy imports.
The document defines the territories where it will be possible to build renewable energy facilities using a simplified procedure.
The adoption of this draft law is a step towards fulfilling Ukraine's obligations within the Energy Community and implementing the provisions of EU Directive 2018/2001 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources.
It also confirms Ukraine's preparation for EU accession negotiations, as energy sector issues are included in the Energy section of the negotiations.
It should be noted that the bill introduces sustainability criteria for biofuels, which will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the development of joint projects with EU countries.
Currently, the level of implementation of EU legislation in the field of renewable energy in Ukraine is estimated at approximately 61%.
Before the second reading, the draft law will be finalized, taking into account technical and legal amendments, proposals from people's deputies, government structures, and industry experts.
