The yield of winter crops in Ukraine is better than last year

The improvement of weather conditions in Ukraine accelerates the harvesting of winter crops and promotes the development of spring crops.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, as of July 20, 5.888 million tons of grain and leguminous crops were threshed from 1.49 million hectares or 14% of the area in Ukraine with a yield of 3.94 tons/ha, in particular:

  • wheat - 3.42 million tons from 830.96 thousand hectares or 18% of the area with a yield of 4.12 tons/ha (2.88 tons/ha in 2022 and 4.11 tons/ha in 2021),
  • barley - 2.253 million tons from 577.2 thousand ha (40%) with a yield of 3.9 t/ha (3.09 t/ha and 4.29 t/ha),
  • peas - 208.9 thousand tons from 85.02 thousand hectares (59%) with a yield of 2.46 tons/ha (1.84 tons/ha and 2.28 tons/ha).

The crop is harvested in all regions of Ukraine, except for Luhansk. As of July 20, the leaders of harvesting were the farmers of Odesa, who threshed 1,297 tons of grain from 412,000 hectares or 42% of the planned area. The best average grain yield (6.09 t/ha) was recorded in the Ternopil region, but only 10% of the planned areas were threshed there.

Also, on the specified date, 1.39 million tons of winter rape were harvested from 563.52 thousand hectares or 41% of the area with an average yield of 2.47 tons/ha (1.94 tons/ha last year).

Data on harvesting in the Russian Federation are not made public, it is only known that on July 19, more than 21 million tons of grain were threshed from 5.5 million hectares with a yield of 3.81 tons/ha (4.06 tons/ha last year). The MSG of the Russian Federation stated that the grain yield was lower than last year, but did not name detailed indicators. According to the agency, the area of winter wheat sowing in the Russian Federation decreased compared to 2022 from 16,693 to 16,044 million hectares, and that of spring wheat - increased from 12,774 to 13 million hectares.

According to the forecast of the MSG of the Russian Federation, in 2023 the grain harvest will amount to 123 million tons (157.7 million tons in 2022), of which wheat will be 78 million tons (104.2 million tons), and exports will reach 55 million tons (60 million tons last year).

Even taking into account the reduction of the harvest, the export potential of the Russian Federation will remain quite high, so it will continue to block exports from Ukraine. And the duty in the amount of $30/t received from each ton of grain sold, the Russian Federation will continue to spend on missiles and projectiles to kill Ukrainians.

In Belarus, as a result of difficult weather conditions, the grain harvest will decrease compared to last year from 8.7 to 7.3 million tons, the MSG of the country reports. As a result, the shortage of grain for animal husbandry needs will grow to 1.3 million tons, which can cover grain imports from the Russian Federation.
