Ukraine sharply increased exports of soybean and sunflower meal in 2022/23 MR

During September-April of the 2022/23 season, Ukraine exported 400,000 tons of soybean meal, which is 20% ahead of last year's pace. According to APC-Inform estimates, the total export in the season may reach a 3-year maximum of 520,000 tons.

Almost 48% of the exported meal was delivered to Poland, which increased its purchase of Ukrainian soybean meal by 62% in 8 months. Deliveries of soybean meal to the EU in the current season doubled, and in general, 83% of all exports were shipped in this direction.

In 2022/23, the EU imported 14.09 million tons of soybean meal, which is 3% less than in this period last year, and the share of deliveries from Brazil increased from 45 to 53%, from Ukraine - from 0.9 to 2.5 % or 348.6 thousand tons, while from Argentina decreased from 40.5 to 34%.

The increase in the export of soybean meal from Ukraine to the EU compensated for the reduction in supplies to Belarus, which was the main buyer of these products before the beginning of the hot phase of the war.

The export of sunflower meal for the period of September-April grew by 1% compared to last year's pace to 2.7 million tons, which is one of the lowest indicators of the last 7 seasons. Almost 50% of the exported meal was purchased by China, and another 38% by the EU. If during the 8 months of 2022/23 MR, the export of sunflower meal to China decreased by 2% compared to the previous season, the supply to the EU increased by 63% to 1 million tons, which almost corresponds to the pre-war level.

EU countries increased sunflower meal imports by 13% to 2.42 million tons in the 8 months of 2022/23 compared to the previous season, and Ukraine's share in the volume of imports increased from 35% to 49%, while Argentina's share decreased from 24 to 21 .6%, and the Russian Federation - from 38.3 to 23%.

In the current season, the EU increased the import of rapeseed meal by 39% to 697 thousand tons, in particular from the Russian Federation - by 68% to 325 thousand tons, from Belarus - by 3.1 times to 229.5 thousand tons, while it reduced supplies from Ukraine in 2.4 times to 59.2 thousand tons.

Therefore, in the new season, Ukraine needs to increase processing and increase pressure on EU countries to buy products from Ukraine, and not from the aggressor country or its supporters.
