Ukraine asks Poland and Moldova to transfer border control zones to their territory

Against the backdrop of the Russian Federation's terrorist attacks on border infrastructure, Ukraine has asked Poland and Moldova to transfer border control to their territory in order to reduce risks for border guards, customs officers, and carriers, as well as to ensure the continuity of freight and passenger transport even in the event of damage to checkpoints on the territory of Ukraine.

Poland has stated that it is ready to consider the possibility of transferring control to its territory and ensuring joint work between Ukrainian and Polish services, but has not yet made a final decision, since EU legislation does not allow representatives of third countries to independently conduct control (check both documents and compliance of goods with EU standards) in the Schengen area.

At the same time, agreements have already been reached with Moldova on the transfer of control zones at two checkpoints. At the Kryva-Mamalyga checkpoint, Ukrainian border guards are already checking transport leaving Ukraine on the territory of Moldova. A similar procedure is planned to be introduced for transport entering Ukraine.

Security risks near the Ukrainian border have recently increased sharply, leading to temporary closures of crossings and suspension of transport. Moldova has even withdrawn its employees from four checkpoints located on Ukrainian territory.

Transferring border control to the territory of neighboring countries will help protect Ukrainian logistics in the event of military operations and ensure transport connections even in the event of damage to border infrastructure on the territory of Ukraine.

However, the implementation of the new mechanism will depend on agreements between states, coordination of the work of relevant services, and the security situation.
