Ukraine plans to open ports for all cargo with the help of global insurance

After attacks by Ukrainian drones on Russian ships, the Russian fleet no longer feels safe in the Black Sea. At the same time, Ukraine is preparing a global insurance mechanism that will help unblock ports for all types of cargo.

Ukraine's first step towards unblocking shipping in the Black Sea was drone strikes on naval bases in Crimea. In addition, attacks by a Russian tanker and warship at the Novorossiysk base posed a threat to Russian commercial shipping.

After that, Ukraine opened a humanitarian corridor in the Black Sea, through which several cargo ships left the ports of Odesa, including the container ship "Joseph Schultz", which had already passed to the safe waters of NATO countries - Romania and Bulgaria. However, not a single ship has yet ventured to go the other way, the Financial Times reports.

The director of the largest Ukrainian metallurgical company Metinvest, whose three ships passed through the humanitarian corridor, said that it would be good if the ships entered the ports for loading.

Participants of the Ukrainian export market believe that the grain agreement is more beneficial to the Russian Federation than to Ukraine, as it allows the Russians to control Ukrainian exports. However, Russia's withdrawal from the agreement changed the situation.

"Not only grain, but also other goods should be exported through the Black Sea Corridor, as the economy of Ukraine is based on this," - believes A. Stavnitser, co-owner and executive director of the TIS terminal in the South port.

The global insurance scheme, the development of which is being completed by the Ukrainian authorities, will help open ports for all types of cargo. It provides monthly insurance for up to 30 ships bound for Ukraine. And possible losses in the amount of up to $30 million will be covered by state funds accumulated in the deposit account.

According to market participants, Ukrainian exporters are already booking the first bulk vessels to call at Black Sea ports.
