In 2025, China reduced wheat imports by 3.7 times

Due to an increase in its own wheat production, China reduced its imports from January to September 2025 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year by almost 3.7 times to 2.9 million tons.

 

According to the General Administration of Customs of the PRC, in 2024, China imported 11 million tons of wheat, of which more than 3.3 million tons were imported from Australia, more than 2.5 million tons from Canada, about 2.3 million tons from France, 1.9 million tons from the USA, 600 thousand tons from Kazakhstan, and 345.8 thousand tons from the Russian Federation (which is 2.5 times higher than in 2023).

 

Recall that in 2023, China imported 11.9 million tons of wheat, and in 2022 - 9.9 million tons.

 

According to the USDA forecast, in 2025/26 MY China will import 6 million tons of wheat (compared to 4.2 million tons in 2024/25 MY and 13.6 million tons in 2023/24 MY).
