In 2024/25, Turkey will reduce wheat imports by 16%

In 2024/25, Turkey will reduce wheat imports compared to the previous season by 16% or 1.5 million tons to the lowest figure of 8 million tons in the last 6 years, the Union of Grain Exporters reports with reference to data from the US MSG.

The reduction in imports is due to the decision of the country's authorities to stop the import of wheat within the framework of the internal processing regime, which allowed processors to import wheat duty-free for the production of flour for the purpose of its export between June 21 and October 15.

In 2023/24 FY, wheat production in Turkey increased to 21 million tons, repeating the record of 2017/18 FY. But despite the increase in exports, the final stocks of wheat in the 2023/24 FY reached the highest level in the last 30 years at 5 million tons. According to forecasts, the wheat harvest in the 2024/25 FY will decrease to 19 million tons, which will still exceed the average 5-year indicator.
