In 2024, the share of agricultural products in Ukraine's exports grew to 59%

In 2024, Ukraine reached the pre-war level of agricultural exports - 78.3 million tons worth $24.5 billion, which amounted to 59% of total exports and became the second historical indicator after 2021, when agricultural exports reached $27.7 billion, - reports Minister of Agricultural Policy V. Koval.

The main export items of the agricultural industry were:

  • sunflower oil – 6 million tons worth $5.1 billion (21%),
  • corn – 29.6 million tons worth $5 billion (21%),
  • wheat – 20.6 million tons worth $3.7 billion (15%),
  • rapeseed – 3.8 million tons worth $1.8 billion (7%),
  • soybeans – 3.4 million tons worth $1.3 billion (5%),
  • oil cake and pulp – 4.7 million tons worth $1 billion (4%),
  • meat and edible poultry products – 447 thousand tons worth $958 million (4%),
  • barley – 3.3 million tons worth $557 million (2%),
  • sugar – 746 thousand tons worth $418 million (2%).

In December 2024, Ukraine exported 5.5 million tons of agricultural products, which is 11.1% less than in the previous month. Exports of agricultural goods have been declining for the second month in a row, and for the first time during the war, this is due not to logistical difficulties created by the Russian aggression, but to the current market situation, the reduction of stocks available for export, and the restraint of sales by farmers in anticipation of better prices.

Compared to November, agricultural exports in December 2024 decreased:

  • grain crops – by 13% to 3.6 million tons (of which 74% corn, 23% wheat and 3% barley),
  • oilseeds – by 28% to 580.6 thousand tons (of which 62% soybeans and 37% rapeseed),
  • vegetable oils – by 22% to 421.9 thousand tons (of which sunflower 90%, soybean 8%, rapeseed 2%),
  • oilcake – increased by 35% to 519.1 thousand tons (of which sunflower 80%, soybean 20%),
  • other types of agricultural products – increased by 8% to 432.2 thousand tons.

As in November, oilseed exports decreased the most in December, due to a reduction in rapeseed stocks intended for export and a decrease in soybean exports due to falling prices for it.

Exports of vegetable oils have declined amid rising prices for sunflower, whose sales are being held back by farmers, reducing oil production. It is worth noting that this situation is temporary.

Grain exports have also declined, including wheat shipments. At the same time, prices for corn, which accounts for the largest share of grain exports, continue to rise, but farmers are holding back sales in anticipation of better prices.
