Grain harvesting and export rates in Ukraine are lower than last year

According to operational data from the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture, as of July 31, 15.474 million tons of grain and leguminous crops were threshed in Ukraine from 4.424 million hectares (39% of the planned harvesting area) with an average yield of 3.5 tons/hectare, which is significantly lower than last year's harvest rates due to heavy rainfall in the western regions of the country.
It should be noted that as of August 1 last year, 25.29 million tons of grain and leguminous crops were harvested in Ukraine from 6.106 million hectares (55% of the planned amount) with an average yield of 4.14 tons/hectare.
In terms of crops, the following have been threshed so far:
- wheat – 11.358 million tons from 2.18 million hectares (44%) with a yield of 32.5/hectare;
- barley – 3.573 million tons from 838.7 thousand hectares (61%) with a yield of 33.3 centners/hectare;
- peas – 492.2 thousand tons from 190.9 thousand hectares (78%) with a yield of 21.6 centners/hectare.
Also, in two regions - Dnipropetrovsk and Kherson - the harvesting of millet has begun, of which 0.83 thousand tons were threshed from 1.2 thousand hectares (2% of the plan) with a yield of 7 centners/hectare.
Also, as of July 31, 1.762 million tons of rapeseed were harvested from 781.9 thousand hectares (61% of the planned amount), with a yield of 2.25 tons/hectare.
In the 2025/26 MY (as of August 1), Ukraine exported 1.665 million tons of grain and leguminous crops, while last year, 3.44 million tons of grain were exported during the same period, the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy reports, citing operational data from the State Customs Service of Ukraine.
By crop, exports amounted to:
- - wheat – 758 thousand tons (in the 2024/25 MY – 1.438 million tons);
- - barley – 257 thousand tons (477 thousand tons);
- - rye – 0 (0.3 thousand tons);
- - corn – 643 thousand tons (1.511 million tons).
Total flour exports from Ukraine in the new season (as of August 1) amounted to 3.6 thousand tons (in the 2024/25 MY - 4.7 thousand tons), in particular wheat - 3.4 thousand tons (4.3 thousand tons).
Wheat exports from major supplier countries, which account for almost half of global wheat trade, are slow, constrained by adverse weather conditions and farmers' sales restraint.
In July, wheat exports from the Russian Federation fell by 30% compared to last year, and from Ukraine by over 60%. The reduction in supplies stabilized wheat futures on the Paris stock exchange and led to an increase in spot prices in the ports of Romania and Bulgaria in July by an average of 8%, and in Rouen, France, by 2%.
