Sowing rates in Ukraine correspond to last year's, but areas under spring wheat and barley have decreased

According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, as of May 2, 2025, 3.252 million hectares or 57% of the planned 5.681 million hectares were sown with spring grain and legume crops in the country (3.407 million hectares or 60.8% on this date last year), in particular:

 

  • wheat – 91% of the forecast or 207.9 thousand hectares (240.7 thousand hectares in 2024 and 236 thousand hectares in 2023),
  • barley – 92% or 715.2 thousand hectares (775.7 and 712.2 thousand hectares),
  • peas – 95% or 205.7 thousand hectares (161.1 and 128.6 thousand hectares),
  • oats – 97% or 156 thousand hectares (159.9 and 132.2 thousand hectares),
  • corn – 48% or 1.919 million hectares (1.9607 and 1.059 million hectares),
  • buckwheat – 8% or 7 thousand hectares (5 and 3.05 thousand hectares),
  • millet – 7.9% or 6 thousand hectares (16.7 and 8.4 thousand hectares),
  • other grain and leguminous crops – 32% or 35.4 thousand hectares.

 

In addition, on the specified date, the following were sown:

  • sunflower – 47% of the plan or 2.365 million hectares (2.9675 in 2024 and 1.485 million hectares in 2023),
  • soybeans – 30.3% or 729.2 thousand hectares (566.7 and 173.6 thousand hectares),
  • sugar beets – 99% or 217.3 thousand hectares (248.4 and 179.2 thousand hectares).

 

Due to dry weather in March and April, the areas sown with spring wheat and barley decreased, but the areas under peas increased, and in case of good rainfall in May, the areas under corn and sunflower may increase.
