EU nitrogen fertilizer prices 45% higher than in 2024, despite cheaper imports

Domestic prices for nitrogen fertilizers in the EU continue to increase relative to the 2024 baseline, although prices for imported products are decreasing.

According to the European Commission, in August, domestic prices for nitrogen fertilizers exceeded the average for 2024 by 40.5%, and in September - by 45.1%, adding 4.6% to the price per month.

At the same time, the average cost of nitrogen fertilizers imported to the EU in September decreased by 13% compared to August, from €416/t to €362/t, which still exceeded the average level of 2024, when it was €298/t.

The cost of mixed fertilizers containing nitrogen in September also decreased by 10.3% compared to August, from €697/t to €625/t, although in 2024 it averaged €486/t.

Despite the reduction in import costs, nitrogen fertilizer prices remain significantly higher than in 2024, which increases the production costs of European farmers, especially in the run-up to fertilizer purchases for breeding campaigns.
