Dry weather contributes to harvesting in Ukraine and Russia, but negatively affects winter crops

The dry and cool weather established in Ukraine and Russia contributes to the harvesting and sowing of winter crops. The lack of precipitation negatively affects winter crops, but farmers hope that the rains will have time to improve the condition of plants before Frost. Sunflower seeds are harvested on 70% of the area. The yield meets expectations and confirms production forecasts, which the USDA estimated for Ukraine at 17 million tons (14.1 million tons in 2020/21 mg) and Russia at 15 million tons (13.3 million tons in 2020/21 MG).

As of October 13, Ukrainian farmers threshed 52.06 million tons of grain and leguminous crops with an average yield of 4.48 t/ha from 11.19 million hectares or 72% of the area.

In particular collected:

  • wheat – 32.38 million tons from 7 million hectares or 100% of the area with a yield of 4.62 t / ha,
  • barley – 9.6 million tons from 2.46 million hectares or 100% of the area with a yield of 4 t / ha,
  • peas – 576.17 thousand tons from 236.3 thousand hectares or 100% of the area with a yield of 2.44 t / ha,
  • corn – 6.92 million tons from 1.2 million hectares or 22% of the area with a yield of 5.75 t / ha,
  • buckwheat – 94.8 thousand tons from 72.3 thousand hectares or 86% of the area with a yield of 1.31 t / ha,
  • millet – 166.8 thousand tons from 71.7 thousand hectares or 92% of the area with a yield of 2.33 t / ha,
  • sunflower-10.91 million tons from 4.72 million hectares or 73% of the area with a yield of 2.31 t / ha,
  • soybeans – 2.01 million tons from 783.7 thousand hectares or 61% of the area with a yield of 2.57 t / ha,
  • rapeseed – 2.9 million tons from 1.01 million hectares or 100% of the area with a yield of 2.86 t/ha.
  •

As of October 11, 4.7 million hectares or 60% of the planned areas were sown with winter crops in Ukraine, in particular:

  • wheat-4.2 million hectares or 63% of the plan,
  • barley – 389 thousand hectares (38%),
  • Rye – 120 thousand hectares (75%),
  • rapeseed – 1 million hectares (97%).

In Russia, as of October 14, 112.7 million tons of grain and leguminous crops were threshed from 42.5 million hectares, namely::

  • wheat-76.5 million tons from 27.2 million hectares or 95% of the area with a yield of 2.81 t / ha,
  • barley – 18.5 million tons from 7.8 million hectares or 98% of the area with a yield of 2.37 t / ha,

  • soybeans – 3.2 million tons from 1.8 million hectares with a yield of 1.78 t/ha.

Dry weather in Russia in August and September delayed the sowing of winter crops, and the lag from last year's pace is increasing. Winter crops were sown on 14.9 million hectares out of the projected 19 million hectares (19.3 million hectares last year).
