Freight rates for the transportation of corn by barge to Constanta decreased to €15/t

During the week, freight rates from the river ports of the Danube and the deep-water ports of Great Odesa remained stable, Atria Brokers reports.

As of February 1, rates for the transportation of 6,000 tons of corn by fire from the ports of Reni and Izmail remained at the level of the previous week:

  • in the direction of Marmara - $27-28/t,
  • of the eastern coast of Greece — 31-32 $/t,
  • of the Eastern Mediterranean — $35-36/t,
  • of the east coast of Italy — 40-42 $/t,
  • Israel — $42-44/t,
  • Spain — $46-48/t,
  • of Spanish Seville — $48-50/t.

The cost of freight for the transportation of corn by handsizes remained unchanged at the level:

  • to the Mediterranean coast of Egypt — 30-31 $/t,
  • to Italy — $32-33/t,
  • to the Mediterranean coast of Spain — $33-35/t,
  • to Tunisia — $37-38/t.

The cost of barge transportation of corn to Constanta and sunflower to Ruse/Silistra decreased by €2/t to €15/t and €21/t, respectively.

The increase in exports through the Black Sea ports reduces the volume of deliveries through the Danube ports, in particular in the direction of Constanta. This reduces the cost of transshipment in Romanian ports, especially given the increase in transshipment capacity.

It will be recalled that the European Commission, within the framework of the "Paths of Solidarity" program aimed at facilitating trade in Ukraine, allocated 126 million euros to Romania to increase the capacity of ports that, after the start of the war in Ukraine, faced a sharp increase in export volumes. The program, valid until 31.12.2024, provides for the allocation of grants totaling up to 10 million euros to logistics companies operating in the Romanian ports of Constanța, Galaţi, Giurgiu on the eastern border of the EU, Porta Alba, Midia and Navodarikanal - Danube - Black Sea, and also in the "satellite ports" of Constanta — Midia and Mangalia in the Sulin Canal.

The vice-president of the European Commission for competition policy, Margret Vestager, noted that this step will allow Romania to overcome the difficulties associated with a significant increase in the volume of transshipment in the ports of the Danube and the Black Sea.
