Romania expects record grain harvest in 2024/25 season

This year, Romania is experiencing exceptionally favorable conditions for growing grain and oilseed crops. According to estimates by the Ministry of Agriculture and leading analysts, the country could harvest one of the largest harvests in recent years.

Wheat: 40% growth

The wheat harvest is estimated at 13.3 million tons, which is 40% more than last year (9.3 million tons). According to expert Cesar Gheorghe, this could even surpass the record harvest of 2021. Such an increase was made possible by intense precipitation in the spring, which significantly improved the condition of the crops.

Sunflower: Romania is the EU leader again

According to the European Commission forecast, Romania will harvest 2.2 million tons of sunflower, which is 50% more than last year. This makes the country the largest sunflower producer in the EU.

• Bulgaria — second: 1.9 million tons (+16%)

• France — third: 1.8 million tons (+22%)

Rapeseed: record areas and yield growth

A record 702,000 hectares have been sown with rapeseed in Romania this year, and the harvest is expected to be 1.5–1.6 million tons (compared to 1.16 million tons last season).

Impact on the Black Sea region

The expected high harvest of wheat, barley and rapeseed in Romania may increase competition in the Black Sea region market, in particular for Ukrainian and Russian grain.

Romanian farmers traditionally begin actively exporting grain at the start of the season, which can put pressure on prices and limit the export opportunities of other suppliers.
