Despite the delay of ships, the pace of exports from Black Sea ports remains high

During the 35th week of operation of the grain corridor (March 27 - April 2), the export of grain from the sea ports of Odesa increased by 6% compared to the previous week to 852.4 thousand tons, although the number of loaded ships decreased by 4 to 18 units. The reason was the agreement of the exporters to use ships with a tonnage of more than 35,000 tons for loading in Black Sea ports, as well as an increase in supplies to Asian countries (primarily, China) by ships of 50,000 tons and more.

The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine reports that "improving the operation of the electronic queue, creating online chats, regular meetings with port operators and market participants, online monitoring of ship inspections, daily updating of information on the AMPU website made it possible to optimize the process and make it transparent for all participants. Already now, the queue of ships for entry and exit has been reduced from 150 to 90 ships, although even this does not satisfy the needs of the ports, which is approximately 40 ships per day."

The main reason for the queue at the Ministry of Infrastructure is considered to be "the destructive position of Russian inspectors as part of the SCC, who continue to stably and unjustifiably delay the inspection and registration of courts." Therefore, only 5-6 inspections out of 10 planned are carried out every day. And in general, only 168 of the planned 303 inspections of the SCC were carried out in March, due to which the ships have been idle for almost a month in the territorial waters of Turkey.

According to the State Customs Service, in 2022/23, Ukraine exported 38,452 million tons of grain and leguminous crops, of which 476,000 tons were exported during April 1-5, namely:

  • wheat – 13.17 million tons (172 thousand tons in April),
  • barley - 2.285 million tons (9 thousand tons),
  • rye – 17.7 thousand tons (0.2 thousand tons),
  • corn - 22.676 million tons (294 thousand tons).

We will remind that in March Ukraine exported 5.3 million tons of grain, which is the largest volume since the beginning of the hot phase of the war. If the country is able to optimize deliveries in various directions and reduce the idle time of vessels, this will support purchase prices and reduce the losses of farmers from blocking exports by Russia.
