Pakistan lifts restrictions on imports of GM soybeans and canola
Pakistan has lifted the 2024 ban on the import of GMO soybeans and canola until 2027. From May 24, imports of genetically modified soybeans and canola can be carried out without restrictions on the validity of permits.
Liberalization of legislation will strengthen the raw material base for the production of oils and animal feed, simplify licensing procedures, and expand the powers of biosafety committees operating at universities and private scientific organizations.
The main change was to allow international biotech companies to apply directly for permits to use GMO crops in agriculture. Once approved by Pakistan’s national environmental agency, these permits will be published on the agency’s website, allowing private importers to purchase approved GMO products without additional licenses.
The country's authorities believe that such a decision will reduce business costs, improve the investment climate, and promote the development of vegetable oil and animal feed production.
