A new respiratory virus from China has already reached Ukraine

China has reported a severe outbreak of the respiratory virus HMPV, which is mostly affecting children in northern regions. The virus's symptoms are similar to those of the flu or cold, including cough, fever, nasal congestion and general weakness.

The disease is usually mild, but in people at risk (infants, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems), it can cause complications, including pneumonia.

Currently, more than 30 cases of the new HMPV virus have been detected in Kazakhstan and 13 in Ukraine.

To prevent the spread of the virus, travel restrictions or partial quarantines may be imposed in China, the world's largest consumer of agricultural products, which will increase pressure on agricultural markets.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) can cause upper and lower respiratory tract disease in people of all ages, especially young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. The virus was discovered in 2001 and, along with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), belongs to the Pneumoviridae family.

IgG antibodies against HMPV are detected in 100% of individuals with re-infection, with seropositivity in children under 10 years of age being almost 100%.

The incubation period is 3 to 6 days, and the disease itself, depending on the severity, lasts an average of 7-10 days. HMPV is most active in temperate climates during late winter and spring.
