China expands list of permitted GM crops

China has expanded the list of genetically modified and genetically modified high-yield crops available to local farmers, issuing safety certificates for 17 varieties, IDK reported, citing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China.

The move is part of the country's efforts to reduce its dependence on imports and ensure food security. According to the ministry, 12 varieties of genetically modified and 5 varieties of non-GM crops have been approved, including two varieties of soybeans and one each of wheat, corn and rice.

The permits were granted to seeds from Beijing-based Dabeinong and China National Seed Group, a subsidiary of Syngenta Group.

In addition, the agency allowed the import of a GM soybean variety produced by BASF that is resistant to insects and herbicides, but it can only be used as raw material for processing.
