China increased grain production to a record 706.5 million tons

In 2024, China increased grain production compared to the previous year by 1.6% from 695.41 million tons to a record 706.5 million tons, the AgroExpert publication reports.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics of the PRC, compared to last year, rice production increased by 0.5% to 207.5 million tons, wheat - by 2.6% to 140.1 million tons, corn - by 2.1% to a record 294.92 million tons for this crop. At the same time, soybean production decreased by 0.9% to 20.65 million tons.
The increase in production is due to an increase in the area sown with rice and corn, as well as an increase in the yield of wheat, corn, and rice.
For 5 consecutive years, China has been increasing the area sown with grain crops. In 2024, they increased by 0.3% compared to the previous year to 119.34 million tons. The area under corn increased by 1.2% to 44.74 million hectares, under rice - for the first time in 4 years - by 0.2% to 29 million hectares, but the area sown with soybeans decreased by 1.4% to 10.33 million hectares and wheat - by 0.2% to 23.6 million hectares.
Despite increasing its own production, China is forced to import significant amounts of soybeans and corn from Brazil and the U.S. In recent years, the Chinese government has been diversifying its agricultural supplies, increasing its own production, and implementing a range of measures to ensure food security.
