Kazakhstan reaped record harvests of grain and oilseed crops in 2025
In 2025, 27.1 million tons of grain were harvested in Kazakhstan from 16 million hectares of land with an average yield of 1.7 tons/hectare, including 20.3 million tons of wheat and over 1 million tons of legumes.
In 2024, 25.2 million tons of grain were harvested, which exceeded the figure in 2023 (17.09 million tons) by 47% and the figure in 2022 (22.03 million tons) by 28%. At the same time, 18.57 million tons of wheat were harvested in 2024 with a yield of 1.42 tons/ha, in 2023 - 12.1 million tons with a yield of 0.92 tons/ha, in 2022 - 16.4 million tons with a yield of 1.28 tons/ha.
A record was set in the harvesting of not only grains, but also legumes and oilseeds, which were given special attention when diversifying the sown areas. Despite the reduction in the area under wheat by 900 thousand hectares, its harvest increased significantly. About 4 million tons of barley were threshed, which corresponds to the level of last year. A record 4.3 million tons of oilseeds have already been harvested, but the harvest is still ongoing.
Cotton harvesting is complete, and the crop amounted to 428 thousand tons (+42% compared to last year) with an average yield of 3 tons/ha, but thanks to drip irrigation, the yield in some farms reached 5 tons/ha.
The introduction of new agricultural technologies has improved grain yields. In 60% of farms, the yield was 1.5-3 t/ha, in 8% - over 3 t/ha, and the national average reached 1.7 t/ha, which is 5% higher than last year.
Grain exports in the 2024/25 MY increased by 47% compared to the previous season to 13.4 million tons thanks to transport subsidies, which were extended until September 1, 2026 to maintain high export rates.
Deliveries to non-traditional sales markets have begun - to Belgium, Portugal, Norway, the UK, Vietnam, the UAE and North African countries (Morocco, Algeria, Egypt), and deliveries to Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia have also resumed.
The country is implementing 5 investment projects for deep grain processing, which will increase consumption by 2.5 million tons.
The volume of grain storage capacities is 30.7 million tons, of which 13.3 million tons are at grain receiving enterprises and 17.4 million tons at agricultural producers.
Of the soft wheat transferred for storage, 53% is high-quality, 35% is classified as class 4, and 12% is substandard.
Thanks to new varieties and hybrids, Kazakhstan will continue to increase the production of grain and oilseed crops, which will increase competition in the Chinese market with the Russian Federation and other countries, especially in the oilseed sector.
