Jordan purchased barley at a tender for $65/t more than in July

The Jordanian Ministry of Trade and Industry purchased 50,000 tons of feed barley of any origin from Bunge in an international tender on September 9 for delivery on October 15-30 at a price of $318.5/ton CFR, which was $65.9/ton CFR higher than the purchase price of the previous tender on July 8, where 60,000 tons of barley were purchased from Dreyfus for delivery on September 1-15 at a price of $252.6/ton CFR - Aqaba.

 

Bid prices rose sharply due to the blockade of exports from Ukraine's Black Sea ports, so Soufflet, Olam, and Cofco offered mostly European barley in the tender.

 

The market expects that by September 16, Jordan will hold another tender for the purchase of 50-60 thousand tons of feed barley with delivery in January-February 2027.

 

In Ukraine, export demand for feed barley remains low, as even the increase in world prices does not compensate for the high cost of logistics for deliveries to the port of Constanta, which reaches $85-120/t. Export demand prices are UAH 7,500-7,800/t or $140-150/t with delivery to Danube ports and $240-250/t with delivery to Constanta.

 

In 2026, 6.4 million tons of barley were threshed in Ukraine from 1.48 million hectares (100% of the area) with a yield of 4.34 tons/hectare. The export potential is 3-3.5 million tons, but since the beginning of the season, only 369 thousand tons of barley have been exported compared to 651 thousand tons for the same period last year.

 

In the near future, barley prices in Ukraine may be supported by an increase in stock market quotes for wheat and corn, as well as purchase prices at importer tenders.
