Spain demands to limit grain imports from Ukraine

The Unión de Uniones organization, which protects the interests of Spanish farmers, will hold a rally in the port of Santander on September 25 with the demand to strengthen control over the ever-growing import of products from Ukraine, which leads to a decrease in domestic grain prices. A similar rally was held on September 23 in Madrid near the European Union building.
In 2023, Spain imported 8.4 million tons of Ukrainian grain, and in the first half of 2024 - almost 6.5 million tons. The Unión de Uniones considers this to be the reason for the drop in grain prices in the country, which has been 45% since May 2022. They call on the authorities to analyze the markups on some products made from grain to avoid bankruptcy of local farmers.
More than half of the grain that Ukraine supplies to the EU is bought by Spain, and at increasingly lower prices. "But it is unacceptable that while the prices of grain have decreased by 45%, electricity - by 70%, animal feed has become cheaper by only 30%, and bread has increased in price by 9%," Unión de Uniones emphasizes.
