The cold weather did not damage crops in Ukraine, and sowing rates remain high

As of May 10, 4.3202 million hectares of grain and leguminous crops were sown on the territory controlled by Ukraine, in particular:

  • corn - 2.838 million hectares;
  • barley - 779.9 thousand hectares;
  • wheat - 244.9 thousand ha;
  • peas - 161.6 thousand ha;

  • millet - 28.5 thousand ha;
  • buckwheat - 14.8 thousand ha.

In addition, already sown:

  • sunflower 3.9637 million hectares,
  • soybean - 1.2013 million hectares,
  • sugar beets - 250.1 thousand ha.

During the last week, 912.9 thousand hectares of areas were sown with summer crops, the largest of them - 157.9 thousand hectares in Chernihiv region.

Currently sown:

  • in Kyiv region - 32.3 thousand hectares of wheat, 44.3 thousand hectares of barley, 5.8 thousand hectares of peas and 6.5 thousand hectares of oats,
  • Dnipropetrovsk region - 28.3 thousand hectares of wheat, 50.5 thousand hectares of barley, 14.28 thousand hectares of peas and 1.2 thousand hectares of oats,

After a two-week period of high temperatures, a significant cooling caused stress to the plants of winter and early spring crops in the north-eastern regions of Ukraine, according to experts of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in a report published by the Ministry of Agriculture.

According to the report, as of May 8, crops of winter wheat that were in the phase of "appearance of the last flag leaf" and early grain crops were not damaged by frost, while the proportion of damaged early crops of corn and soybeans was 3-5%. In order to reduce the negative impact of low temperatures on plants, they need to be treated with microfertilizers of organic origin with amino acids, scientists believe.

"The drop in air temperature to 3-4 o C and frost in the period of May 8-9 may have a negative impact on winter crops in the Kharkiv region - possible damage to the intercalary growth zones of shoots, the base and top of the growth cone or the formed ear; disruption of the development of the generative sphere of plants, which can subsequently lead to cross-graining, ear damage (white earing) and a decrease in plant productivity. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the plants to determine the condition of the conducting vessels that feed the spike, and the viability of the spike and its elements," the report says.
