FAS predicts that Turkey will harvest a record wheat crop in the 2026/27 MY

According to the forecast of the Foreign Agricultural Service of the United States of America (FAS USDA), in 2026/27 MY, due to increased rainfall, wheat production in Turkey will increase by 20% compared to the previous season to 19.8 million tons, which will be the second highest indicator in the history of observations. At the same time, the area of land under cultivation will reach an 8-year maximum of 7.45 million hectares.

Some experts believe that in the event of favorable rains in March-May, the wheat harvest may even exceed the record set three years ago and reach 21 million tons.

Increasing production will reduce the need for imports, which will decrease by 10% to 6.5 million tons in the 2026/27 MY.

Turkey does not need to import wheat for its own consumption, but it will continue to buy milling wheat for processing to ensure flour exports, FAS believes.

Recall that Turkey remains the world's largest exporter of flour, although it has difficulties regaining its lost share in the markets of Africa and the Middle East.

From June 2025 to January 2026, the country reduced flour exports compared to the corresponding period of the previous season by 3% to 2.2 million tons in wheat equivalent.

Despite the reduction in purchases, Iraq remains the main buyer of Turkish flour, followed by Syria and Somalia. At the same time, an increase in flour supplies to Indonesia, Syria and Ghana was recorded.

As Turkish farmers switch to wheat, the country's corn acreage will decrease by 10% this year, resulting in an 11% drop in production to 7 million tonnes.
