Eurostat has published a report on the value of agricultural land in the EU in 2023

According to the latest Eurostat report, in 2023 the average cost of 1 hectare of arable land in the European Union was 11,791 euros, and the average rental price of 1 hectare of arable land or pasture was 173 euros. The report takes into account data provided by 22 EU countries.
The most expensive agricultural land was in the following countries:
- Malta – €283,039/ha,
- Netherlands – €91,154/ha,
- Luxembourg – 42,540 €/ha.
The lowest prices for agricultural land were recorded:
- Croatia – €4,491/ha,
- Latvia – 4,591 €/ha,
- Slovakia – €5,189/ha.
It is worth noting that land prices depend not only on the country, but also on the specific region.
So , the most expensive land is located in the following regions:
- Vienna, Austria – €189,000/ha,
- Flevoland, Netherlands – €178,093/ha,
- Canary Islands, Spain – €148,247/ha.
The cheapest regions were:
- Övre Norrland, Sweden – €1,951/ha,
- Mellersta Norrland, Sweden – €2,378/ha,
- Franche-Comté, France – €2,580/ha.
The cost of renting 1 ha of arable land and pasture among the 21 EU countries that provided data was highest in the Netherlands (€914/ha) and lowest in Slovakia (€67/ha).
But the differences in rental prices are also significant depending on the region of location:
- Flevoland, Netherlands — €1,787/ha,
- Eastern Slovakia, Slovakia — 43 €/ha,
- Central Slovakia, Slovakia — 40 €/ha,
- Övre Norrland and Mellersta Norrland, Sweden — €24/ha.
The significant difference in prices for agricultural land and its lease in EU countries is due to both the local level of development of the agricultural sector and the economic situation in certain regions.
