The European Union may increase sugar imports by 70% due to a reduction in its own production

According to the European Commission's forecast, in the 2026/27 MY, sugar production in the EU will decrease by 3.2 million tons compared to the previous season, to 13.4 million tons.

Sugar stocks at the beginning of the season will amount to 3.1 million tons, which will exceed the corresponding figure last year by 700 thousand tons, but this will not be able to compensate for the sharp reduction in production.

As a result, to meet domestic needs, EU countries will be forced to increase sugar imports by 70% from 880 thousand tons to 1.5 million tons and reduce its exports by 63% from 1.6 million tons to 600 thousand tons.

Thus, as a result of a sharp decrease in production, the balance of sugar in the EU will change significantly, and the European Union, which was previously a large exporter of sugar, will become heavily dependent on its imports.
