Egypt harvests larger-than-expected wheat crop

According to the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture, wheat in the country has been harvested on 98% of the planned area or 1.26 million hectares, and the total harvest could amount to 10 million tons. Moreover, 3.2 million tons of new harvest wheat have already been purchased on the domestic market for the state reserve.
The Egyptian authorities have issued the necessary directives to facilitate the supply process, provide technical support to farmers, minimize post-harvest losses, and encourage agricultural mechanization.
Currently, Egypt meets about 56% of its domestic wheat demand through its own production.
According to the USDA forecast, in the 2025/26 MY, Egypt will harvest 9.3 million tons of wheat from 1.43 million hectares of land, which will correspond to the 5-year average and slightly exceed the 2024 harvest (9.2 million tons).
However, thanks to increased sowing areas and improved yields, total production this year could exceed a record 9.85 million tons.
Recall that Egypt is the world's largest importer of wheat, purchasing 12-13 million tons of grain every year. Moreover, the volume of government purchases has been decreasing recently, and private companies are increasingly engaged in imports.
