Egypt harvests over 10 million tons of wheat for the first time, reducing its dependence on imports

In 2026, Egypt increased wheat production compared to the previous season by 6.5% to a record 10 million tons, which allowed it to reduce wheat imports from 13.2 to 12.5 million tons, according to the country's MSG.

The level of government wheat purchases is also approaching a record level, reaching 5 million tons by the end of the season, facilitated by an increase in the purchase price for farmers to 2,500 Egyptian pounds per ardeb (198 liters).

Egypt managed to increase wheat production this season by increasing the sowing area by 600 thousand feddans compared to 2025 to 3.76 million feddans, as well as increasing the average yield to 18-20 ardebs/feddan, and in farms using innovative technologies - up to 28 ardebs/feddan.

The improvement in wheat yields was facilitated by the breeding programs of the Agricultural Research Center, where over the past three years, almost 60 new high-yielding varieties and hybrids of major agricultural crops (including wheat, corn, rice, as well as oilseed and fodder crops) have been bred, resistant to diseases and adapted to local climatic conditions.

In addition, the application of new agricultural technologies on an area of almost 2.8 million acres, including laser field leveling, deep soil loosening, and moisture storage technologies, has increased crop yields by almost 20%.

Such steps by the authorities contribute to strengthening the country's food security and reducing its dependence on imported products.
