Harvesting data confirm forecasts of a good grain harvest in Ukraine

Data on high yields of grain and oilseeds in the southern regions of Ukraine, as well as traditionally high yields in the central and western regions, confirm forecasts of a record grain harvest.

The harvesting rate is 31% lower than last year, but the yield is 14% better than on the same date last year.

As of July 22, 14.1 million tons of grain and leguminous crops with an average yield of 4.18 t/ha were threshed in Ukraine from 3.4 million hectares or 22% of the area, in particular:

  • 5 million tons of barley from 1.189 million hectares or 48% of the area with a yield of 4.18 t/ha (3.68 t/ha in 2020),
  • 8.86 million tons of wheat from 2.068 million hectares or 30% of the area with a yield of 4.28 t/ha (3.66 t/ha in 2020),
  • 242 thousand tons of peas from 110 thousand hectares or 47% of the area with a yield of 2.21 t/ha.

In addition, out of 274.32 thousand hectares or 27% of the area, 674.91 thousand tons of rapeseed were threshed with a yield of 2.46 t/ha, while on this date last year rapeseed was threshed on 55% of the area, and the yield was 19% lower.

Now the leader in harvesting is the Kherson region, whose farmers from 542 thousand hectares or 69% of the area threshed 2.2 million tons of grain with a yield of 4.54 t/ha. The second place is occupied by Mykolaiv region, where 2.182 million tons of grain with a yield of 3.98 t/ha were threshed from 548 thousand hectares or 60% of the area.

According to USDA estimates, this year the grain harvest in Ukraine will grow by 15% compared to last year to 30 million tons, and may even exceed the forecast if the yield in the eastern regions is also high. We can already say that barley production will be 13% higher than last year, and will reach 10-10.5 million tons, while the USDA estimates it at 9.2 million tons.
