Bulgaria harvests record 7.4 million tons of wheat and expects good corn and sunflower harvests

For the second year in a row, Bulgaria has reaped record wheat harvests. Despite a 7% reduction in the area sown, this year's harvest reached 7.4 million tonnes thanks to a high yield of 6.3 t/ha, which is 9% higher than the 2025 figure and 12% higher than the 5-year average. Bulgaria ranked second in the EU after Romania in terms of yield growth compared to the 5-year average.

According to MARS, moderate temperatures in July and August, the absence of heat stress, and sufficient precipitation are contributing to a good corn harvest in the country. Corn yields are expected to almost double compared to last year and reach 5.5 t/ha, which is 29% higher than the 5-year average.

Sunflower yield is forecast at 2.3 t/ha, which will exceed last year's figure by 37% and the 5-year average level by 13%.

The potential for spring crop yields in Bulgaria is significantly better than in other EU countries that suffered from heat and drought in the summer. Even despite a slight deterioration in the crop condition in August, the yield forecasts for sunflower and maize are well above the multi-year average.
