Ukraine completes the harvesting of early cereals and accelerates the harvesting of sunflowers and soybeans

Ukrainian farmers have almost completed the harvesting of early grains, and from 6.693 million hectares or 60% of the area, they threshed 25.8 million tons of grain with an average yield of 3.85 tons/ha, while last year in this period, 44 million were harvested from 10.6 million hectares t.

Currently collected:

  • 19.2 million tons of wheat from 4.7 million hectares or 99% of the area (32.8 million tons in 2021) with a yield of 4.1 tons/ha,
  • 5.5 million tons (10.1 million tons) of barley from 1.6 million hectares or 100% of the area with a yield of 3.47 tons/ha,
  • 249.7 thousand tons (570 thousand tons) of peas from 109.1 thousand hectares or 98% of the area with a yield of 2.29 tons/ha,
  • 12.6 thousand tons of buckwheat from 9.7 thousand hectares or 8% of the area with a yield of 1.3 tons/ha,
  • 16.2 thousand tons of millet from 7.9 thousand hectares or 18% of the area with a yield of 2.04 tons/ha.

In addition, 3.1 million tons (2.9 million tons last year) of rapeseed with a yield of 2.85 tons/ha were collected from 1.096 million hectares or 100% of the area.

Early grain harvesting has been completed in 15 regions: Vinnytsia, Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Rivne, Chernivtsi, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk, Chernihiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Poltava, Cherkasy. And the highest yield of 6.23 t/ha was obtained by the farmers of Khmelnytskyi region.

Farmers have started harvesting soybeans and sunflowers. 81,700 tons of sunflower were threshed from 69 thousand hectares or 1% of the area with a yield of 1.17 tons/ha, which indicates a decrease in the yield in the south due to drought. 1.3 thousand tons of soybeans were harvested from 1.4 thousand hectares or 0.1% of the area with a yield of 0.93 tons/ha. According to forecasts, the sunflower crop will amount to 9-10 million tons, and soybeans - 2.5-3 million tons.

In Russia this year, thanks to favorable weather and an increase in the sowing area, the harvest of not only wheat, but also of oil crops, in particular sunflower - by 7% to 16.8-17 million tons, soybeans - by 15% to 5.5 million tons will grow to a record level , rapeseed - by 43% to 4 million tons. Compared to last year, as of September 2, the yield of sunflower increased from 1.46 to 2.3 tons/ha, soybeans - from 1.68 to 1.73 tons/ha, rapeseed - from 1.98 to 2.5 t/ha.

The large volume of Russian grain offers is putting pressure on Ukrainian grain prices, which remain lower than in the Russian Federation, due to a sharp increase in the cost of logistics for export deliveries against the background of the war in Ukraine.

Therefore, the prices of soybeans and sunflowers will remain under pressure, especially in the first half of the season, despite the reduction of the harvest.
