Due to the war, Ukraine reduced the volume of exports by 38.4% to almost 100 million tons

Due to the war and the blockade of ports, logistics became the main problem of exports. In 2022, Ukraine reduced the volume of exports by 38.4%, and its value - by 35% compared to 2021.

According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Economy, during the year Ukraine exported 99.8 million tons of products (of which 16.3 million tons via the grain corridor) worth $44.1 billion, and in the 11 months of 2022, exports decreased by 36.6% from 61, $3 billion to $40.7 billion.

The main trade partner of Ukraine, as in 2021, was the EU countries, whose share in domestic exports grew from 40.4% at the beginning of the year to 68.8% in November (63.3% in 11 months). At the same time, exports to Asian countries decreased from 35.2% in January to 21.6% in November (21.8% in 11 months). Exports to African countries amounted to 4.9%, to other European countries - 4.1%.

The largest buyers of Ukrainian products with a corresponding share in Ukraine's exports were:

  • Poland – 15.2% or $6.2 billion,
  • Romania – 8.6% or $3.5 billion,
  • Turkey – 6.6% or $2.7 billion,
  • China – 5.4% or $2.2 billion,
  • Germany and Hungary – each 5.2% or $2.1 billion.

It is worth noting that the export of goods to Turkey decreased by 29% during the year, and to China by as much as 69%.

The first position in domestic exports is occupied by corn, which shipped 24.99 million tons worth $5.94 billion, which is 1% higher than in 2021. The second place is occupied by sunflower oil, the export of which decreased by 16.3 compared to last year % to 4.29 million tons, and in monetary terms - by 14.4% to $5.46 billion. At the same time, the export of sunflower seeds grew 33 times to 2.7 million tons or $1.255 billion, as domestic oil extraction factories could not process such volumes. It is worth hoping that in 2023 the export of seeds will decrease, and the export of sunflower oil will increase accordingly.

Due to the blockade of ports and the drop in prices and demand against the background of the global economic recession, iron ore exports decreased by 45.9% to 23.9 million tons compared to the previous year, and in monetary terms by 57.8% to $2.9 billion .

Exports of wheat decreased by 44.1% to 11.2 million tons, and in money terms - by 44.7% to $2.6 billion, and only in September the volume of exports exceeded the mark of 1 million tons per month.

The volume of rapeseed exports increased by 17% to 3.12 million tons, but the amount of revenues decreased by 8.6% to $1.54 billion.

The export of insulated wires, traditionally the leader of industrial exports, decreased by 13.6% to 65.9 thousand tons, and in monetary terms - by 16.4% to $1.32 billion.

The export of domestic metallurgy products - in particular semi-finished steel products and hot-rolled products - fell by 72% over the year, from 404,000 tons in January to 31,000 tons in December. In 2022, 1.9 million tons of semi-finished products were shipped for $1.1 billion, and 1.3 million tons of rolled goods for $1 billion were shipped.

Despite the war, soybean exports grew by 81.6% to 1.99 million tons, and in monetary terms - by 42% to $862 million. And the export of poultry meat decreased by 10% to 413 thousand tons, although the revenue from it increased by 19% to $852 million.

If in 2021 Ukraine imported 35 million tons of products worth $58 billion, then in 2022 the volume of supplies decreased by 48.1% and in money terms by 19.6%, although the final figure may still be adjusted.
