The IGC predicts an increase in world pea production in FY2023/24

IGC experts predict that the world production of dry peas in 2023/24 MR will reach 13.9 million tons, which will exceed the previous season by 0.5%, primarily due to an increase in the harvest in the Russian Federation by 400 thousand tons to 4 million tons.

This means that the Russian Federation will remain the world's largest producer of dry peas. Second place will be taken by Canada, which will harvest 2.6 million tons of peas, which is 23.8% or 800 thousand tons less than the previous season.

The third place in the list of the largest producers is occupied by EU countries, where the pea harvest will increase compared to last year by 100,000 tons to 2 million tons thanks to the increase in production in Romania, while in Germany it will decrease by 59,000 tons to 264,000 tons.

According to IGC estimates, in 2023, the USA increased pea production by 100,000 tons to 800,000 tons compared to the previous year, and Ukraine - by 100,000 tons to 400,000 tons.

Given the significant demand in the EU for imported feed protein, it is important for European countries to fully realize the high potential of growing dry peas and other large-grain legumes.
