Prices for peas in Ukraine rose after the resumption of supplies to India

According to the forecast of the Leguminous Crops Association of Ukraine, in 2024 domestic farmers will harvest at least 400,000 tons of peas.

"The average yield of peas is 2.3 t/ha, with some producers - up to 3 t/ha. Before the war, Ukraine consumed 65,000-75,000 tons of peas a year, and now it consumes no more than 40,000 tons, and exports the rest," said the head of the Association, A. Sklyarenko.

In 2024, more than 160,000 hectares are planned to be sown with peas, but the possibility of exporting them to China and India may encourage farmers to increase the area of sowing.

Starting from February, purchase prices for peas in Ukraine increased by 2-3 thousand hryvnias/ton after India canceled the customs duty on the import of peas until April 30, 2024. We will remind that India is one of the largest consumers of niche crops and the main world importer peas

Prices for peas will receive additional support when Ukraine starts supplying peas to the "premium" market of China, A. Sklyarenko notes.

At the same time, analysts report that the growth of pea prices has stopped, and export demand has slightly decreased, which may lead to lower domestic prices.

"Ukraine supplies peas not only to India and China, but also to Pakistan, Turkey, and EU countries. Our producers have started selling split peas, which have a higher price and are in demand in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. To increase sales, farmers need to go to international exhibitions, gain experience and establish contacts," added Sklyarenko.
