Ukraine and Russia may harvest almost 200 million tons of grain together in 2021

The Black Sea region has a significant share in both global grain production and global grain exports. According to the June forecast of the USDA, Ukraine and Russia in 2021/22 MG will harvest a total of 15% of the world wheat crop, 18% of the world barley crop and 4% of corn, and will enter the top 10 World exporters of major grain crops.

Both in Ukraine and in Russia, where grain sowing areas are relatively stable, the volume of harvest mainly depends on the yield. In 2020, grain production in Russia increased compared to 2019, while in Ukraine it decreased due to adverse weather conditions. However, the situation is expected to change in 2021.

According to forecasts of APK-Inform experts, in 2021 Ukraine will increase grain production by 13% compared to the previous year from 64.9 to 73.8 million tons, in particular:

  • corn – by 19% to 36.2 million tons,
  • wheat – by 10% to 27.3 million tons,
  • barley – by 3% to 7.9 million tons.

At the same time, grain production in Russia will decrease by 6% to 125.7 million tons, in particular:

  • wheat-by 8% to 79.3 million tons,
  • barley – by 5% to 20 million tons,
  • corn – up to 13.9 million tons.

However, the increase in the harvest in Ukraine compensates for the reduction in production in Russia, and the total grain harvest collected by both countries in 2021 will amount to 199.4 million tons, which is 975.6 thousand tons higher than in 2020.
